Description
Rugged, cragged mountain peaks – cliffs that we view from a distance but cannot imagine ever climbing.
This is Ascension, inviting the viewer on a hike in the Wallowa Mountains in Oregon on a late summer day, because by this time, most of last season’s snow has melted, and one can make it along the narrow and winding paths without slipping and sliding – at least on the snow.
The rock formations are bold, sharp edged, massive, and the hiker, upon stopping to rest, takes a moment to view the majestic view before him or her. And because we are human, the first thing we think is, “How can I get up to the top of the mountain?”
It’s not impossible, but it does take skill and equipment. For those who have not invested the time into the skill and the money into the equipment, there is nothing wrong with stopping on the path, contenting oneself with the view, and marveling at the sheer beauty of nature. It is not necessary, to achieve contentment and joy in life, to conquer every challenge that one sees, or thinks one sees, before one.
Sometimes the challenge is that of wisdom – being willing to admit that we cannot do it all. Indeed, we were not created to conquer everything and stand atop every rock and hill, flag in hand. Sometimes that wisdom calls upon our humility to recognize that, though we cannot do everything, we can do many things. And if we long to do many more things, many grander things, then perhaps the best thing is to call upon the Person who made all things in the first place, and see how we can walk through life, our hand in His, meeting challenges with the help of His strength and wisdom.
At that point, we ascend to heights beyond any we ever imagined possible.
